October is Black History Month in the UK – but do you know how it all started? Can you answer these questions:
- Who founded Black History Month?
- How old is Black History Month?
- Is Black History Month celebrated at the same time all over the world?
- What is the theme for Black History Month this year?
Now watch this film to see if you were right!
Our ALIVE value this week is ‘We Value Justice and Respect’. How do you think this links with the theme of Black History Month this year (Reclaiming Narratives)?
This is what it says in Proverbs:
‘Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves…speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of those in need.’ Proverbs 31:8-9
To think about:
- When was the last time you spoke up for someone who couldn’t speak up for themselves?
- Why is it important to speak up for others with kindness and respect?
- Have you ever been in a position where someone stuck up for you, and it really helped you?
Prayer
Dear Lord, we value justice and respect is one of our ALIVE values at SMRT. Please help us to live this out with our actions. Help us to speak up for those who need us and help us to do this with kindness and respect. Thank you that you always care for those dealing with injustice, and you want the world to be a fair and respectful place. Help us to be more like you. We ask these things in your name, Amen
