Lent 1

Weekly Worship from Chaplain Josh

It’s Pancake Day on Tuesday!

Let’s start with a group discussion: ‘Lemon and sugar are the best toppings for a pancake.’ Agree or Disagree?

With Pancake Day happening this week, it signifies the beginning of Lent, which starts on Ash Wednesday.

Lent is a 40-day period of reflection and preparation leading up to Easter, resembling Jesus’ 40-days in the wilderness before he started his ministry.

How would you describe Lent?

Starting next week, some of our Student Chaplains will take the lead in guiding our Weekly Worship reflections throughout the remainder of Lent.

For this week, let's focus on our personal reflection and preparation. Lent is not just about giving up sweets and chocolate or following a list of dos and don'ts, but it is about preparing our hearts for the incredible celebration of Easter.

Lent is the opportunity for us all to encourage one another to grow closer to God and remember His incredible love for us. Here are some ideas for what we can do through Lent:

  1. Spending time in guided prayer and reflection
  2. Finding time to set aside and read the Bible
  3. Taking moments in our day to be quiet and talk with God
  4. Demonstrate God’s love by looking out for each other and helping others.

For this year’s Lent, I want to spend more time in prayer. I’m going to create moments in my day to be quiet and pray. I also want to chat with God more during my daily activities, like when I'm driving to work, cooking dinner, or winning with Bristol Rovers in EAFC 25.
What will Lent look like for you this year?

Let’s pray,

Heavenly Father,

As we journey through this season of Lent, help us to draw closer to You. We thank You for Your endless love and grace, and for the opportunity to reflect and grow in our faith.

Guide us to understand the true meaning of sacrifice and selflessness. Teach us to be more like Jesus, who gave His life for us. Let us find strength in His example and strive to live with kindness, compassion, and forgiveness.

During these forty days, may we take time to pause and listen to Your voice. Help us to let go of distractions and focus on deepening our relationship with You. Inspire us to serve others and to bring Your light and love into our community.

Amen.
