Remembrance
Weekly Worship from Chaplain Josh
This week, we’ll take a moment to reflect on the Remembrance Events that took place on the weekend and throughout the coming week.

If you ever get the chance to visit Westminster Abbey in London, you will find the memorial tomb of the Unknown Warrior. An unidentified member of the British Armed Forces who fought and died in World War 1.
This memorial tomb was the inspired idea of Rev. David Railton, an army chaplain who was deeply stirred after observing many graves of unknown soldiers. He hoped that an unknown soldier could be buried amongst some of the most important historical figures, in Westminster Abbey. This was a symbol of total respect and remembrance of the incredible sacrifice made by those who had fought during the war.
The Unknown Warrior was one of over 1 million British Military Personnel who died in WW1 and WW2. We take time this week to remember those who laid down their lives for the sake of others and each of us. We remember them because of their sacrifice and for the freedom they fought for.
It is hard for us to fully imagine what so many have been through in war, but it is vital that we try, for only then can we appreciate all we owe to the millions we remember today, and so understand the importance of maintaining peace for future generations.
Ask someone to slowly read out this prayer. As they read, take a moment to remember those who have sacrificed for us. Reflect on how we can be inspired by those who have sought to maintain peace in this world.
Father God,
You tell us in scripture that the greatest act of love is seen as those lay their lives down for others around them.
We remember, in honour and respect, those who have fought and died for us in conflict and war. We pray with the famous words,
'They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old; age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them.’
We ask that love and peace will triumph in places of war and that all violence and injustice will quickly end. We also pray for your protection of all families, all homes and all who are caught in conflict. We ask that you will meet all the needs of those who are suffering.
We ask that the hope you give us, which is light in our world, shines through the total darkness and all can see the love of Christ in their lives.
Hear our prayer,
Amen.
